design

Despite a few obvious changes, such as the new camera setup in the upper left corner, the OnePlus 8T has a design that is not much different from its predecessor. The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is very similar to the original Galaxy S20. It is held together by an aluminum frame with a glass-like finish on the back of the glass.

Both producers have very unique design languages, and they have a few things in common. Both phones have AMOLED displays and the S20 FE features a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 and a fresh resolution of 120Hz. The OnePlus 8T has a 6.55-inch fluid AMOLED display with the same resolution and refresh rate. Punch holes are the name of the game here and the S20 FE focuses on the punch hole and the OnePlus 8T pushes it to the top left corner. As you might expect, no phone has a headphone jack.

Despite a number of significant improvements, both phones offer very functional designs.

There are two color choices for the OnePlus 8T: Moon Silver and Aquamarine Green. Samsung takes a different approach, offering several colorways. You can choose from Cloud Naval, Cloud Red, Cloud Lavender, Cloud Mint, Cloud White or Cloud Orange.

If water and dust resistance is important to you, you will be happy to know that the Galaxy S20 FE has an IP68 rating. There is no such rating for the normally unlocked OnePlus 8T. However, T-Mobile users can get the so-called OnePlus 8T Plus, which offers all the features but has an IP68 rating.

Hardware

Whatever phone you choose, you will get a lot of power. Both devices have the same Qualcomm 865 chipset with 5G support. For those outside the US, there is also an optional 4G version of the Galaxy S20 FE with Samsung’s internal Exynos 990 chip. If 5G is important to you, the Galaxy S20 FE is a more robust choice and supports Sub-6 and MMWave. 8T only supports sub-6, which means that it does not work with certain carriers, such as Verizon.

You can find some variations by turning to the rest of the specifications. For starters, the OnePlus 8T comes in two configurations: 8GB RAM with 128GB storage, or 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. The Galaxy S20 FE has 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of storage on the keyboard. There is no model with more RAM or storage, and you can add 1TB of extra storage via microSD.

Both phones have a 4,500mAh battery that supports fast charging. The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE has a 15W wire charger outside the box but supports 25W with an optional adapter. The OnePlus 8T can charge from 8T to 100% in 39 minutes with its included Warp Charge 65 charger. Even the 8T can quickly charge other devices at speeds of up to 45W.

Only the Galaxy S20 FE supports wireless charging with speeds of up to 15W. Other devices even support wireless charging.

The OnePlus 8T has a Sony IMX586 with 48MP main rear camera and 16MP 123 degree ultra wide camera. There is also a third 5MP macro sensor 2MP monochrome camera. Finally, there is a 16MP camera on the front.

OnePlus says the 8T will include special AI camera features. One of them will automatically detect if the phone has a low light setting, so it can immediately switch to the camera’s Nightscape mode. In our review of the phone, we noted that we were disappointed with the overall image quality of the photos taken with the cameras.

In contrast, the Galaxy S20 FE has three rear camera sensors: a 12MP standard camera, a 12MP wide-angle camera and an 8MP telephoto camera. You also get a 32MP front camera. In our review of the phone, we stated that the Galaxy S20 FE cameras produce solid but unexpected images. It can record videos but they are limited to 4K resolution at 60Kps.

Software

OnePlus 8T comes with Oxygen OS 11 based on the new Android 11 operating system. The Oxygen operating system has historically been kept in a very partition-like design, with the latest software making a few changes that make the Android parts move a bit. Some of the changes include the addition of new OnePlus Sans fonts, which are always visible and include enhancements to Dark Wall and Zen Wall.

The Galaxy S20 FE Ships ship with Android 10 with one UI skin. Not a word about when the Android 11 update will be available. Samsung has announced that it will support the Galaxy S20 FE with three updates to the Android operating system. The OnePlus 8T will get at least two Android operating system updates or an extra year for software security updates.

OnePlus 8T vs Samsung Galaxy S20 FE: What should you buy?

On paper, the Galaxy S20 beats the OnePlus 8T in several areas, including FE pricing. It also supports wireless charging and promises at least three Android operating system updates for the Samsung phone. Pictures taken with the Galaxy S20 FE seem to come out of those made with the OnePlus 8T. IP68 rating is a pleasure. Finally, those microSD slots give users more storage expansion.

The OnePlus 8T, however, has more keyboard storage for its US version. It comes out with Android 11. The Warp Charge 65W charger means that it works in a very short time with your phone compared to the Galaxy S20 FE. Its glass back is a bit more premium than the plastic on the Samsung phone. However, the IP68 rating is only available on the sold-out version of T-Mobile.

It’s a close call between the OnePlus 8T and the Galaxy S20 FE and it ultimately comes down to personal preferences.
