9/7/20 Update: This review has been updated with the test results.
This is a story about $ 10,000. That is the difference in the base price between 2020 Audi S6 The sedan and its mechanically similar brother, smooth, swipe, sexy S7 luxo-hatch. How much is a smooth, sweep and sexy value?
Before guessing about the relative value of attractive design, we are going to dig into the broader technology under beautiful skin.
At the heart of both the S6 and S7 is the dual turbocharged and supercharged 2.9-liter V-6 code EA839. This engine replaces the dual-turbocharged EA834 4.0-liter V-8 used in the previous generation of the pair – it is rated at 450 horsepower and generates 406 lb-ft of torque as low as 1400 rpm. The EA839 V-6 and its electric auxiliary components provide six horses for the V-8. But the 444 horsepower is still powerful. Its 443 pounds is 37 more than the old V-8. It rises 500 rpm later in the 1900s.
Placement of overflow-powered turbocharger cylinders in the valley between banks is now standard practice Audi’s V-configured engine. The presence of exhaust ports aimed at the turbocharged paddy gives a very short travel time for the exhaust gases rotating around the turbine. That means a quick thrust response. However, that is not enough.
The S6 and S7 were Audi’s first products in the United States to use a 48-volt electric supercharger. The liquid-cooled compressor hangs low on the left side of the engine between the turbocharger and the air-to-liquid intercooler. To sharpen the thrust response, the electric blast generates a thrust and the turbos move at a faster speed. Heck, theoretically the engine can be deactivated and boosted even when cold. Add the latest tactic to a list that includes direct injection and variable valve timing, the result of which is surprisingly easy, ridiculously smooth, and ridiculously responsive V-6. Above all, a soft hybrid system and its boot generator contribute to its direct mutations. After all, the S6 averages 23 mpg, and in our care, the EPA is one mpg higher than the combined estimate.
The enhanced V-6 feeds Audi’s version of the all-powerful ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. Used in everything from the Rolls Royce Dawn to the Dodge Hellcats, the ZF is a traditional automatic machine with a torque converter similar in concept to the 1962 Chevrolet Nova’s two-speed powerglide option. Careful programming means that it always works well. Rumor has it that the ZF is so powerful that it will soon show up on Schwinn exercise bikes and the latest Caterpillar mine trucks.
Then, below all, is Avi’s quattro all-wheel drive system. Yes, the quattro system works well. Torque-vector rear differential is available, adding a calculated torque distribution to the rear tire for better rotation and balance across the corners. What is so satisfying is how well Audi has integrated this technology to work almost seamlessly on an invisible level. Although all computer experts have manipulated this complex force, the S6 still has a dynamic mechanical form.
Pull the pedal behind the steering wheel into a lower gear, the whole S6 expects an end on its adaptive air suspension. The $ 4000 S Sport package also includes optional four-wheel steering, torque-vector rear differential, sporty exhaust system and red ink brake caliper. But it seems to be working. For example, we drove in California. Although our Michigan Test car did not have the S Sport package, it still felt extremely agile and compact. However, the grip around the skid pad (0.90 g) with the 21-inch Pierre P Zero summer tires (size 255 / 35R-21) is only sufficient for a car of this caliber.
At the top of the corner, as the driver begins to roll into the thrust, the response from the engine is sublimely progressive and imitative. There are sedans that pack more animal walls, but nothing that powers them in a more dynamic way. This is a 4472 pound car that crawls like a happy husk, bites the corners like a wolf, and then runs like anything the wolf hunts. At 60 mph it takes 4.0 seconds to flatten out and is one tenth of a second faster than the 2020 S7, which weighs an extra 168 pounds but is two tenths slower than before, with the V-8 weighing in at 83 pounds. The new S6 and S7 accelerate through four miles per hour and reach a top speed of 112 miles per hour in 12.5 seconds. But then again, the last S6 we tested had a top speed of two tenths and a top speed of 1 mph.
From the inside, the S6 and S7 are no different. There are several different surface aces and finishes, but the sun shapes are similar and Audi’s three-screen digital interface is similar. Once you become familiar with the haptic feedback built into the menu and neutral touch screens, the S6’s intensive electronics, navigation systems, and various security technologies are somewhat easier to manage.
With its sleek look, great ride, beautiful interior and technical stuff, the current mid-size Audi – interior model code C8, apologizes flat to Corvette. So, why is Audi asking for another $ 10,000 for the S7?
The S7 is an attractive car, and it’s not hard to look at the S6. The S6 has a larger front and rear headroom, a shoulder room and a half-inch rear leg. The only practical advantage the S7 offers is the extra 11 cubic feet of storage space under its hatchback. This is important if you are building a pool house and expect to make many visits to the home depot for timber.
Sexual appeal matters. So, the S6 starts at $ 74,895 and the S7 starts at $ 84,895. The only significant device difference seems to be that the S7 gets standard LED headlights; They are not essential on the S6. Twenty is a lot to pay for fancy tiling.
